    Get Your House Back-to-School Ready

    Find me on:

As back-to-school season approaches, it’s easy to get lost in the chaos of it all. Mornings get busier, schedules become tighter, and the house gets messier. But do not fear! There are easy measures you can take to make your day-to-day routine more streamlined and less stressful. Whether your kids are just beginning kindergarten or entering their senior year of high school, these tips are applicable to all ages. Without further ado, here is a checklist to help you get your home back-to-school ready.

Smart Home_Echo_Plant1. Make Your Home Smart

Set up a Smart Home device in your home to have a personal and digital home assistant. This tool is great for setting up tasks and automating your daily routines. For example, you can use Smart Home devices like an Amazon Echo to set morning alarms, schedule reminders (i.e., to pack lunches or backpacks), monitor how much time your kids spend watching tv, or automate soft music and dimmed lights at bedtime.

Other Smart Home features include automated temperature adjustments, remote control of your home appliances, and reliable home security. If you aren't able to be at home all the time, use a smart lock like Latch to lock and unlock the front door for your kids remotely. You can also use a Nest to turn off your AC when no one is home during the day and schedule a temperature adjustment 30 minutes before your kids arrive from school in order to save energy.

    2. Create an Ideal Study Space

Designate an area or room in your home for your kids to study and take refuge after school. Keeping the room brightly lit, at a cool but comfortable temperature, and removing distractions will support concentration. That being said, avoid creating study spaces in the kitchen and near the television, where distractions abound. You can also stash your printer, extra school supplies, and textbooks in this area to maximize convenience.

Pro tip: If your kids will be in the study room or nook for extended periods of time, try to use an area with ample natural lighting — it will help them stay energized and lower your electricity bill!

Family Calendar_Whiteboard3. Calendar Like a Boss

During this busy time of the year, it is especially important to stay organized and on task. To do so, create a family calendar with all of the upcoming sporting events, carpooling schedules, recitals, etc. This will prevent you from double booking and allow you to physically visualize how busy your days, weeks, or months are. This can be done by using a shared Google Calendar or large whiteboard. You can even color code to help you differentiate your tasks and events.

Pro tip: Do not set your calendar into stone. Schedule changes are inevitable, so it’s best to be flexible. Make sure you can easily make changes to your calendar.

    4. Set Up a “Drop Zone”

After a long day at school and practice, most kids will want to throw down their belongings the moment they set foot in the house. Trust us, we know how cluttered it can get. Instead, dedicate and prepare an after school “drop zone” for backpacks and shoes. We recommend that you add wall hooks as well as a shoe rack to help keep this area organized and tidy. This space can also be used to stow sports equipment, lunch boxes, instruments, umbrellas, etc.

Pro tip: Use this area to display what we like to call a "reminder wall." Whether you list out chores, reminders to return library books, or upcoming doctor appointments, this wall can be as simple as sticky notes or a small white board.

Back-to-school season can be one of the busiest and costliest times of the year. It requires a shift in gears both mentally and physically from parents and students. We hope this checklist will help you and your family become better prepared for the upcoming weeks until your new schedule becomes daily routine.
