Ever wonder who our House Managers are? How they got started in the "biz"? Or what they do when they're not on the clock? They have fascinating backstories and hobbies! Next up, we're pleased to introduce you to George, one of the most seasoned House Managers on our team and also a talented classic car builder. Read on for his story as well as his top tip for homeowners this fall.
QUESTION: Hi George! How did you get into home maintenance?
George: I got into this through my father. He was a maintenance supervisor when I was a senior in high school.
QUESTION: What was the first thing you fixed around your own home?
George: I replaced my garbage disposal. It was easy. It just broke so I went out to Home Depot and replaced it.
QUESTION: What’s your background or area of expertise?
George: Plumbing. I’ve done a lot of the plumbing work for previous companies. It’s always the bulk of the work orders. I’ve unclogged underground main drains. I’ve also had to snake drains from the tops of 4-story buildings down to the basement. You use a 100-foot cable.
QUESTION: What's your favorite tool or piece of equipment?
George: I enjoy using the handsaw doing woodwork. I don’t do a lot of it so when I get the chance I enjoy it. I like doing fences. I had to repair my gate at home, a couple of latches, and hinges. I enjoy measuring everything out, making good cuts, and seeing the job completed at the end.
QUESTION: Have any tips or advice for homeowners?
George: Yes, at the end of the summer, cover your AC unit so it doesn’t get any debris or leaves in the wintertime. You can buy AC unit covers online, or I just buy a $10 tarp from Home Depot and cover it with some bungee cords. It’s a lot cheaper. The specialized covers are a little expensive.
QUESTION: How do you spend your free time?
George: I spend it with my kids and my wife. We go to dinner every Friday night. We also go to car shows and movies. I have a classic car that I built, a 72 Oldsmobile. We spend a day just looking at cars. I’ve been into this since I was 16. I got started with my father. He was a mechanic and showed me the ins and outs of how to repair cars. It’s something I do with my kids now.
QUESTION: What did you want to be when you grew up?
George: I wanted to be an auto mechanic. I found it interesting since I was working on cars since I was 14. I always enjoyed working with my hands.
QUESTION: What’s been your proudest moment in this line of work?
George: Doing quality work for the members and having them ask me to come back to their homes. It’s a good feeling when you do good work and they really appreciate it.
And appreciate him, they do! Here's a quote from a satisfied member:
“George from AAA House Manager did outstanding work at our home on our list of to do's. He was knowledgeable, efficient, and was able to brainstorm alternative solutions when I did not necessarily want to spend lots of money on something minor. Outstanding job, and we will definitely have you guys on speed dial.”
